Trumpesque alt-right nationalism must be defeated in Europe

Next year's European elections could arguably be the most significant in the short history of the European Union. 

Ja stel je voor dat er nu ineens wel meer dan 40% van de mensen uit hun bed komen voor een fopparlement van witte wijn zuipende klaplaven. Gaap.

In the wake of President Trump's victory in the United States and the Brexit referendum, we are seeing the polarization of politics on the European continent. Right-wing populists and nationalists, led by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, are squaring off against those who want to defend liberal democracy and fight for an open society.During a recent meeting with the leader of Italy's far-right Lega party, Matteo Salvini, Orbán declared: "There are two sides at the moment in Europe. One is led by Macron, who is supporting migration. The other one is supported by countries that want to protect their borders." French President Emmanuel Macron hit back: "If they want to see me as their main opponent, they are right."

Dat, maar ook extreem-linkse haatantifa's, doordrammede "progressives", idiote diversiteitspushers, een ontwakend populisme in het agressieve slachtofferschap van het kleedjesvolk. Tis heus niet allemaal de schuld van de rechtsies hoor, dat hysterische discours. Het is niet alsof alleen rechts hier onredelijk en polariserend is. De linkse neiging om elke andere opvatting als karakterfout of gevolg van "witheid" te zien is moordend voor het debat.

With the backing of alt-right leader Steve Bannon and the blessing of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the far right's plan is to spread the populism that delivered Brexit and Trump to provoke an implosion of the European project and an erosion of the democratic institutions the US has helped to develop since the Second World War.

*Jawoor, de Russen en de haatbloggers hebben het weer gedaan. In plaats van eens af te vragen of al die Europese projectjes met de grote arbeidsimbalans, de straightjacket-munt en de toenemende kloof tussen arm en rijk door de neoliberale koers van financialisering wel zo handig zijn moet het natuurlijk allemaal weer aan de duistere machten liggen. Heel Europa kampt met veel te duur vast goed, studieschulden en stagnerende lonen, maar het is natuurlijk veel makkelijker om naar Bannon en VVP te wijzen. Multimiljonair, supercommissaris en gravy train-machinist Verhofstadt voelt natuurlijk niet wat de gewone man in zijn beurs voelt. SAD! *

In the absence of traditional support from the US administration, it rests with pro-Europeans and defenders of liberal democracy in Europe to challenge head-on the myths and disinformation perpetuated by populists. 

*Zucht. De schuld van het ineenstorten van de liberale wereldorde wordt maar weer eens gezocht in een paar mannetjes met foute ideetjes, in plaats van aan een gierend uit de klauw lopend kapitalistisch systeem dat de kloof tussen de haves en de have nots maximaal uitbuit. Makkelijk, dat buzzword, "disinformation", maar het staat natuurlijk weinig in verband met de werkelijke problemen. *

For too long, in both the US and Europe, populists have gotten away with selling a retreat to isolationism and protectionism, wrapped up in a rose-tinted notion of absolute national sovereignty, as a solution to voter's problems. Progressive voices must now challenge these assumptions and once again make the case for internationalism.

Nationalists worship at the altar of the nation state, but in 2018 it's obvious that no European country can tackle climate change, people trafficking or drug smuggling on its own.

*Ja, nee, dat komt dus omdat die natiestaten al hun tools om deze problemen aan te pakken (voornamelijk grenzen) al zijn verloren aan supranationale instituten. Verhofstadt is zelf zo'n lul die de natiestaat ontmantelt heeft en nu klaagt dat ie ontmantelt is. Zo werkt het dus niet. Op een wat concreter niveau werkt een systeem van kleine, isoleerbare nationale "eilandjes" met eigen grenzen natuurlijk veel beter dan een enorm en poreus Empire met onhoudbare en oncontroleerbare buitengrezen. *

Pooling some sovereignty to better shape the world around us does not mean giving away control -- it is a means to leverage power and take back control in a world increasingly dominated by social media companies and tech giants.

*Leguens, leugens. "Pooling sovereignity" als eufemisme voor de ongekozen mandarijnen in BXL aan de knoppen laten is schofterig. Feesboek de schuld geven van problemen met de ondemocratische mandarijnenkaste in BXL is echt lachwekkend. Als je denkt dat burgers in dergelijke argumentatie trappen dan ben je wel echt een totale debiel, Guy. *

If the US or Europe does not shape the rules of international trade, China will. If we do not act to define limits on artificial intelligence, we leave that power to companies like Amazon or Google. 

*Guyke, een ding tegelijk please. In je spuugrant ook nog China en Google erbij betrekken terwijl je gewoon begon over verkiezingen voor het EP? Hou je ogen eens op de bal in plaats van met nog meer bangmakerij met abstracte angsten zonder onderbouwing te komen. *

Likewise, with migration, no single European country can deliver a fair and humane system that would work in practice. Far-right European populists like Salvini and Orbán have successfully exploited people's fears about migration by turning Europe's refugee crisis of 2015 into a political crisis.

Yet in many instances, in both the US and Europe, fears over migration are based on perceptions of the number of immigrants in our societies, rather than the actual numbers: a feeling, as opposed to reality.

Migration is central to the human story, but progressive politicians must also offer real solutions to people's concerns. In Europe, liberals and democrats must show it is possible to build a collective, humane asylum and migration system founded on a respect for our international obligations. This must come hand in hand with a more responsible and coherent foreign policy.

*Ja, en dat komt dus omdat alleen de elite denkt dat vluchtelingen meteen recht hebben op woning, werk en wijf, dat Europa de morele redder van de wereld moet zijn en dat alle armoede, diefstal, stabbings, verkrachtings en brandstichtings rond de viriele mannen uit zonnige delen van de wereld niet bestaan. Voor Verhofstadt zijn alle nieuwsberichten (en opsporingsberichten) niets meer dan dat - berichten die de kop in moeten worden gedrukt. Jammer genoeg zijn het wel gewoon echte berichten over echte incidenten die leiden tot echte zorgen. Migratie is geen mentaliteitsprobleem - maar elitaire fucknuggets als Guy willen dat niet accepteren. *

Just as Europeans failed to adequately respond to the global financial crisis, the West's failure to stop Putin and Assad's bloodshed in Syria and the collapse of Libya are all drivers of Europe's migration challenges, now used by the far right to undermine liberal democratic parties.

A credible and serious European foreign policy, backed up with a joint European defense capability, could change this dynamic. American friends of Europe should be bold in pressing for EU reform.

Pardon? Vergeten we even dat de EU jarenlang die dictators in het zadel hielp met ontwikkelingshulp en wapenleveranties? Vergeten we dat de oliebedrijven waar Guyke commissaris is veel zaken doet met allerlei schimmige praatbaarden? Een euroleger om dit kolonialisme te versterken en de oorlog met Poetin aan te wakkeren ten faveure van de grote bedrijven waar je commissaris bent - het is cynisch.

To prevent a victory for Steve Bannon and his ragbag of right-wing populists in next year's elections, it falls to pro-Europeans to offer a vision of hope and renewal: a promise to deliver enhanced rights and freedoms for all the citizens of Europe.

Such a program would stand in stark contrast to the dystopian offer of "unfreedom" promised by the far right.

*Ja, Bannon, de grote boeman! En de strijd voor nationale soevereiniteit versus het grootkapitaal en de ondemocratische machten "unfreedom" noemen is nogal grof en leugenachtig. *

The new divide in European politics is not between left and right, it is between nationalist illiberalism and pro-European liberal democracy. We face a battle for the defense of liberal democracy and the stakes are high.

Europeans and Americans who value a democratic and peaceful European continent must start tackling the lies of right-wing populists head-on, while offering a positive alternative vision of a democratic, outward-looking, reformed European Union at peace with itself.
