De takes variëren nogal. Hier een homoseksuele moslims met de intersectionele lezing: "Pinkwashing in its highest form: pride flag over the corpses and destroyed homes of thousands. Queer liberation is 100% antithetical to literal genocide, to ethnonationalism, to settler colonialism. F*cking disgraceful." De populistisch-conservatieve lezing luidt: "holding a pride flag with "in the name of love" written on it with a completely leveled city in the background is maybe the greatest, most succinct representation of liberal imperialism I've ever seen." De andere kant van datzelfde hoefijzer schrijft: "There is nothing more liberal than conducting a genocide in the middle east while waving pride flags as Hollywood goons applaud your brave progressivism." De duiding van cultuur-respecteerders is: "Incredibly dumb to go into Muslim areas and raise LGBT Jewish flags and then pretend like you’re respecting the people there and their faith and culture etc. It’s going to be viewed asliterally gay Jewish colonization." De belangenbehartigers van daadwerkelijke homoseksuelen in Gaza zeggen: "Queer Palestinians are dying under the bombs but the white gays get to lift their flag on stolen land that has become a graveyard for children. Fuck you all." RTL Nieuws: "Dit is een grap, toch?" En de islamitische lezing luidt: "faggot" en "“They hate us because of our advanced, gay civilization”".

Nemen we allemaal mee ter overweging. Maar onderaan de streept blijft de zaak natuurlijk: elke burgerdode is niet alleen de schuld, maar ook de wens van Hamas zelf, dat zeker wist dat er duizenden Gazaanse burgers - homo's incluis - gedood zouden worden in Israëls Hamas-vernietigingscampagne, omdat Hamas in burgerkleding vecht en zijn hoofdkwartieren onder, in en naast ziekenhuizen heeft. En als een deel van Gaza na de vernietiging van Hamas inderdaad opnieuw onder Israëlisch bewind komt te staan - wat op dit moment niet uitgesloten is - dan is het óók de schuld van Hamas zelf als dat stukje grond meer LGBTQ-vriendelijk wordt dan het daarvoor was. 

Maar, voor de volledigheid, ook Israël zelf is geen smetvrije herensauna (meer) hè: "Israel saw a record number of 3,309 instances of violence and hate speech directed at members of the LGBTQ+ community (...) The year 2022 saw an 11% rise in the number of reports of harassment against members of the LGBTQ+ community compared to 2021, part of a pattern of rising reports of harassment in recent years. In 2022, around 35% of reported violent incidents happened in public areas, such as on the street, in neighborhoods or on public transportation. This is a fivefold increase from 2021, where this accounted for just 7% of cases."

De bovenstaande IDF-soldaat Yoav Atzmoni licht zijn vlaggenactie toe: "There is an internal message to Israel: that we carry obligations towards the state and must demand gay rights here - not necessarily to marry and start a family, but something more basic - the right to security as LGBTQ people, the right to respect, the right to be part of the national ethos, the right to be counted and recognized. The external message to the world is that despite the pain of war - the IDF is the ONLY army in the Middle East that defends democratic values. It is the ONLY army that allows gay people the freedom to be who we are. And so I fully believe in the righteousness of our cause."
